Mission Statement

Our mandate is to gather research and exhibit historical information pertaining to people, places and events in Billings Township.

How it began:

Billings Township had a heritage building that was not being used. The museum board took it over with the intention of housing a museum inside. Short term government funding made it operational.

To date:

We have developed a functioning multi-media resource centre that explores life in Billings Township, Agriculture, Shipping, Commercial Fishing, Sawmills, local military history and the infamous Daniel Dodge tragedy.

The Museum has many sections to wander through.  All of the exhibits are wheelchair accessible.  The "Life in Billings" exhibit features the Gordon family, who has spent generations living in the Kagawong area. In a separate exhibit, more than a dozen generational wedding dresses from the Gordon family are on display. In the museum you will learn about this history of the Old Mill itself and the local fishing, shipping and lumber businesses. The popular shipwreck exhibit features the Franklin Expedition this season.   The museum proudly displays BillingsTownship’s Military History.  Come learn the tragic story of Dodge Motor Company heir Daniel Dodge who died just outside of Kagawong while on his honeymoon in 1938.  All this and more awaits you at the Old Mill Heritage Centre.

Check out Mariners Park.

Below is a picture of Mariners Park behind our museum in Kagawong. The park has a beautiful view of Mudge Bay and the North Channel.  Picnic tables are available.

Old Mill Studios

The Billings Museum Board operates a functioning audio/video studio that provides the tools required to document places and events for this area. The studio also records the oral history of constituents from this municipality and that of other areas on Manitoulin Island. Business can also hire Old Mill Studios to produce promotional videos (DVD’s) for their company.
